The Chinese junk, named for the type of its sail, was designed about 13 centuries ago by people in the port city of Shanghai. It is said to be China's first freighter ship, developed to carry more cargo than earlier vessels. In this kit, use the long wooden pieces for the sides of the hull, designed to protect from crosswinds and reefs. The rectangular sail, used in junks for the first time in China, allowed sailing against the wind.
